One down, six more AMAZING DESTINATIONS to go!

GREETINGS FELLOW ESCAPESEEKERS…

Just wanted to drop a quick note to update you on the ESCAPESEEKER team’s filming status. In one sentence, it has been an absolute RUSH–both in emotion and in the speed by which we are moving from location to location. And, oh my gosh, one more word about getting the ultimate RUSH–How about the sheer thrill of driving a LAMBORGHINI going 200 kilometers per hour? Been there, didn’t do exactly that…LAMBORGHINI’s seasoned driver was behind the wheel–THANK GOODNESS for that…especially since our team driver, Vances, was driving the advance car–a Mercedes with Dale shooting from the trunk of the car! You wanna know about COURAGE and TRUST? Our team has it all.

Now, if that isn’t thrilling enough, tomorrow I’m going behind the wheel of a FERRARI…all captured in HIGH DEF by big RED–our amazing state of the art high def camera. Both of our photogs, Dale Green and Howard Little are getting some mighty muscles lugging this 50 pound RED camera around.
Oh, shoot, speaking of RED, our DP, Dale, is giving me the signal…gotta go for now. We’re filming a segment in my stunning suite at the BERNINI PALACE HOTEL in Florence. I’ll be back to write more details after we finish. This is a lot of HARD WORK. But, we are having an absolute blast! You should see us trying to load our equipment onto the Euro Star from Bologna to Florence. What an adventure our team is having!

Thanks, Maggie Garratt, Dale Green, Howard Little, and Gabrielle Gee, for all your hard work and dedication!

By the way, my co-host, Gabrielle is a real NATURAL in front of the camera…it is as if she’s been doing it all her life! We shot an entire segment of her jogging up the porticos to San Luca Basilica, overlooking the city of Bologna, and she never even broke out in a sweat! What a star!

Ok team, one down and only six more to go.

Back in a flash,

Mel and the rough and tough filming team of ESCAPESEEKER!

ESCAPESEEKER FILMING SET TO BEGIN: La Dolce Vita ~ here we come!

Sunday, August 24th, 2008
Hello ESCAPESEEKER fans!

I am just packing to leave in the morning…this time with a lot more care because what I pack will be the exact wardrobe captured for my new TV series, ESCAPESEEKER! Yes, my brand new LUXURY TRAVEL SERIES is actually happening. Our High-Def Cinematographers are all set to go–our Italian production partners are set and waiting too.

I will be on one amazing La Dolce Vita adventure–beginning with a private cooking class with Italy’s renowned Executive Chef, Lamborghini driving adventure in the rich Po Valley and along Bologna’s Porticoed streets, as well as ‘”summitting” Bologna’s numerous towers to acquire a birds eye perspective.

Then it is off to Florence (kayaking the river, driving a Ferrari through Tuscany speeding past medieval villages, learning the art of leather craftsmanship, tasting exquisite Tuscan dishes (and the finest wines) at the Frescobaldi Estate, etc., etc.

From there we proceed to the floating city–Venice–a city I know so well that I cannot even begin to list all of that we’re going to do–except I must tell you about one very exciting event that ESCAPESEEKER is hosting in conjunction with SONY PICTURES. We are throwing a post-premiere party for Jonathan Demme’s festival entry–RACHEL GETTING MARRIED, starring Anne Hathaway and Debra Winger. You should see the beautiful invitation designed by our own ESCAPESEEKER graphics artist, Nicole Delong! Of course, the electronic version is just the first step in penetrating the entrance to the event. You still have to arrive with the official hard copy sent by SONY or ESCAPESEEKER or BAGLIONI (our event sponsors) via snail mail. And don’t think that alone will get you in. You will have to be on an official SONY/BAGLIONI/ESCAPESEEKER VIP list! Welcome to Hollywood a la Venice. And we thought airport security was tight! If you are going to be in Venice on September 3rd, let me know–I may just have an invitation for you. 🙂

From Venice, we will travel to the coastal resort of Punta Ala, where we will board a gorgeous yacht for some ocean activities amongst a long list of other film friendly activities. We also plan on getting some down time for our entire crew here, because the last two destinations are packed full, and we are going to be hopping like never before.

After some R & R, to the Eternal City we go, for special “encounters” at the Vatican, experiencing the Roman nightlife with an Italian TV star, and a coming out party at Princess Borghese’s castle on the coast, just outside of Rome. We also get a history lesson from a Roman scholar–but not of the touristy variety–we’re hitting all the back alleys where real Romans spend their time–after all, WHEN IN ROME, DO AS ROMANS DO! 🙂

From there, its off to Milan/Lake Como for a FASHIONISTA’s DREAM WEEK–it’s Milan’s Fashion Week followed by interviews with the world’s greatest names in Fashion–whom we shall visit at their Lake Como villa–arriving via Sea Plane!!!

By the way, one of my favorite portions or should I say scoop about all these destinations? At each locale, we will test their GELATO…in order to determine which of the renowned locations has the best GELATO in Italy!!

I guess, you can say, Life is oh so sweet for this ESCAPESEEKER! Especially since, during the entire adventure we will be in residence at the various luxury hotels that belong to the exquisite Baglioni Hotels Collection, renowned for their luxurious style with an Italian touch.

My daughter, Gabrielle is accompanying me on this adventure. There’s only one thing better than luxury globetrotting~and that is luxury globetrotting with someone you love! Gabrielle and I are thrilled to experience LA DOLCE VITA together. Not to mention, just think of all the youthful zest she’ll add to the ESCAPESEEKER team!

We shall keep you posted whenever possible.

Ciao,

Escapeseeker

ESCAPESEEKER TEAM FINDS A SLICE OF HEAVEN ON EARTH…WELCOME TO THE K CLUB!

Monday, August 4th, 2008
As if the beauty of the K Club wasn’t enough to take ones breath away…
on the
day before our departure, we conducted some last minute explorations of the two magnificent Arnold Palmer designed golf courses. We wanted to be sure we had captured all the images we needed. During our pleasant golf cart drive along the River Liffey, we turned a corner, looked up, and WOW! Right before our eyes, with all the splendor that mother nature could muster, there she was: an absolutely stunning Irish Rainbow…I was so excited…I jumped off my golf cart and ran towards it as if I had to make absolutely sure it was REAL! Thank you Chad for the quickness of your lens that captured this priceless moment. I’m going to start calling you, “Quick Draw Buchanan!” You know what they say is hidden at the end of the Rainbow don’t you? We didn’t search for the pot of gold, because witnessing the glorious rainbow before our very eyes was treasure enough!

Our own photographer, Chad Buchanan captured this image

of the K Club, (The Kildare Hotel), in all her Irish Glory.

A very warm “one-hundred thousand welcomes” receives
guests in this comfortable “home sweet home” setting adorned
with original works of art from Dr. Smurfit’s priceless collection.

Home of the 2006 RYDER CUP

“A River (Liffey) Runs Through It”
The exact spot that Tiger Woods learned how to fly fish!

It is heavenly waking up early each
morning and having this glorious
temperature-perfect pool all to myself!
*****

Straffan, County Kildare, IRELAND – Yes, the Escapeseeker team returned to the land of “one-hundred thousand welcomes” only to find a luxury country escape that far exceeds our expectations. It is truly a “slice of heaven on earth”–a picture perfect Country Estate, framed by a panoramic emerald vista highlighted by baby blue skies dotted with white- puffed clouds slowly drifting by. It is the legendary, world renowned, K CLUB, home of the prestigious 2006 RYDER CUP.

But beyond its superb championship golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer, a plethora of activities await every guest, each one tailor-made to meet their expectations. Here are just a few of the unforgettable experiences we’ve engaged in thus far. By the way, photos to accompany these fun activities will be posted in just a few hours after our photographer completes submitting them. So, please stay tuned. The images will truly speak volumes!

1) Fly Fishing: Have you ever yearned to know what it feels like to cast a line and relish the exciting tug of a vibrant rainbow trout–and thereafter, watching him dance across the fast moving river as he challenges your strength and prowess as you skillfully reel him in? (Ok, in my case, the skill and guidance came compliments of the K Club’s expert fisherman, Albert.) With a slight kiss, I thanked him for the rush and thrill of the sport, and sent him swiftly back into the rushing river…so someone else can enjoy the next dance. 🙂 I’m definitely hooked on the sport!

2) Golf at The K Club: The Palmer Course and The Smurfit Course are considered two of Ireland’s finest championship golf courses! And, even before tackling either one, we were granted the finest golf pro teacher any of us had ever encountered. She’s Head Golf Professional, Lynn McCool. She made every minute count as she shared her secrets to keeping our swing consistent…consistently good that is! With her Irish sense of humor, and superb people skills, even I learned to be a better golfer. As a matter of fact, I think I’m now addicted to the sport! Playing golf in this heavenly setting, who wouldn’t be?

3) The K Spa: Honestly, can our job get any tougher? The K Spa brought the best elements from the world’s renowned spas to Ireland offering a selection of holistic natural treatments filled with calming and harmonizing natural fragrances. Ok, maybe I haven’t found just a slice of heaven–I’ve found two! After being treated by Lesley’s natural gift of healing, I felt totally de-stressed, especially after our long and extensive weeks of travel. Thank you Lesley for helping me regain my body’s sense of balance.

4) Clay Pigeon Shooting: With the aid of an expert, the three of us didn’t take long before we were aiming right on target and blasting the “flock” of clay pigeons towards every direction. I didn’t engage in the sport as long as my other two colleagues–who found it extremely satisfying. I just wanted to do it so that I could check it off my life’s “bucket list”!

5) Dining: With three outstanding restaurants on the property, I must confess, our team has become proficient at dining, particularly enjoying the ultimate 5-star dining experiences at The Byerley Turk and The River Room Restaurant overlooking the gardens and river. There are scales in our suites that prove it too! 🙂

Well, I’ve gotta run for now so I can enjoy the K Club’s fully equipped gymnasium with state-of-the-art life-fitness equipment. I need to “earn” my next superbly prepared meal–honestly, it makes my mouth water just thinking about the varied dishes, including homestyle Irish recipes exquisitely prepared by the K Club’s finest chefs!

The beautiful images above (with the exception of the top one as noted) was provided by The K Club. I’ll be back to share some additional outstanding images captured by our own photographer, Chad Buchanan, during our many activities mentioned above.

Have a TREMENDOUS day everyone,

Mel aka ESCAPESEEKER

GREAT SCOTT!!
HOW DID I GO FROM THIS… (above)
TO THIS (below) IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS?

A view of The Balmoral Clock Tower in the
distance…which is visible from anywhere in
the city…that is of course, weather permitting!

The EDINBURGH CASTLE…Oh if these walls could speak…
What stories they could tell!

Edinburgh, SCOTLAND — If you ever get to thinking you have it really tough, just google Scotland’s history, and you will find yourself extremely grateful for your own set of challenges. These past two days, I’ve received a fast track course on Edinburgh, Scotland, and I find myself being very impressed at the resiliency of the Scottish people. We arrived very late on the evening of the 28th. The sky was dark…there was fog and mist, and a cold chill in the air that reminded me that I was definitely not in Venice anymore. Our limo driver, a very large jolly fellow, just laughed when I commented how cold it was. “Ha, he said, this is nothing!” “It’s rather balmy,” he added in a deep Scottish accent, I could barely understand. I turned to our photographer and asked, “Chad, do we have a translator arranged while we are in Scotland?” Honestly, they speak another language. And the entire city is a HARRY POTTER movie set. Prior to my visit to Edinburgh, I used to think that Ms. J.K. Rowling had a phenomenal imagination. After just two days of roaming the city, I find my imagination running wild too! Does it have something to do with the fact that I am staying in the J.K. Rowling Suite at The Balmoral, where she stayed for one month to write one of her latter series? Perhaps. But more likely, is it possible to be born into this environment, and live here all your life without allowing your creativity to just flow–whether it translates into song, or book or even a screenplay–your chances are greatly improved if you spend sufficient time in Edinburgh. Come stay at The Balmoral, 1 Princess Street–right in the heart of the city. And, you too, might want to stay in the J.K. Rowling Suite and test your power of the pen.

Redefines the meaning of “Cruising Main”…
This is definitely Life Imitating Art!

Our ESCAPESEEKER team wishes to thank the tremendous staff of the Luna Baglioni for making our stay ever so special…and for making us feel like family.

Con tutti i nostri cuori, Grazie.

THANK YOU ROBERTO BOCUS FOR SHARING WITH OUR ESCAPESEEKER TEAM, THE VENICE ONLY YOU KNOW…

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Ok, if you REALLY, REALLY want to feel the TRUE MAGIC OF VENICE…that of the contagious, heartfelt variety…you’ve got to see it through the eyes of someone who is deeply in love with Venice…someone who loves every aspect of Venice, and who can recite its history from memory…and as he does, you’ll notice his eyes sparkle with pride. Well, we had the privilege of finding such a special individual. His name is Roberto Bocus, and he is the owner of the famed OSTERIA, IL MILION, located in the quiet charming corner of San Giovanni Grisostomo with its grapevine-shaded, outdoor cafe-style seating. By the way, Roberto also happens to live in the former home of the author of that famous book, IL MILION–MARCO POLO! How about that for credentials?

Well, yesterday was one lucky day for our ESCAPESEEKER team–Chad, Nicole and yours truly. After Roberto served us some of the most delicious Venetian dishes we’ve ever tasted, he said, “Would you like to see the Venice I know from my boat?” Our team just looked up and in a chorus said, “WELL, YES, ABSOLUTELY!!!”

I could go on and on about the most magnificent sites we were able to partake of from his 100-year old wooden boat–which is so apropos–it just fits the entire historic ambiance of Venice…even nature provided the perfect lighting for Chad’s continuous clicking–capturing one gorgeous, priceless image after another as Roberto navigated our way from one tight spot to another with such ease. And, when Chad happen to mention how much he loved the vivid colors of Venice, Roberto responded, “Oh that’s nothing…you want to see colors, I will show you.” We then proceeded to navigate our way to the Grand Canal and onto more open waterways (pass Venice’s historic cemetery where many members of Venetian’s upper class are laid to rest) which further out led us to Murano (famous for Venetian glassmaking, and glass art), and eventually to the rainbow colored splashed island of Burano! Chad got his fill of color on that island!

And, what’s really cool, we threw in some fun, frolicking photos too, especially as we worked our way back to Roberto’s home, including the one above of me testing to see if I can still jump like a college cheerleader (especially since I had the very big birthday the other day). I just had to try it…and on Venice’s oldest bridge nonetheless. Oh the joys of being the ESCAPESEEKER!

Gotta run, we’re boarding another plane to Edinburgh! I promise to post more photos of our Venetian experience once I’m settled in. The entire experience is so TV ready–from our special Sunday described above, to the impeccable service we received at the Luna Baglioni Hotel–especially from the Luna’s CANOVA restaurant staff, Rami Hamam and his very expressive and helpful assistant, Antonella. Rami “conducts” the restaurant like a musical conductor directs his orchestra–not a single sour note–all the guests are treated to a harmonious feast of artistically prepared and presented cuisine. I am missing the Luna already!

But, another ESCAPESEEKER adventure awaits…I believe I’m going to need a sweater this time around. Goodbye Venice, Hello Edinburgh!

Ciao,
Escapeseeker

PRICELESS MEMORIES of our ESCAPESEEKER episode, entitled, "LA DOLCE VITA" captured by our ESCAPESEEKER photographer, Chad Buchanan

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Bologna–As our “advance research” for the highly awaited filming of our premiere episode featuring Italy slowly comes to a close, we begin to review the thousands of images captured by our talented photographer, Chad Buchanan. Our entire team is moved by these images as our priceless memories are forever immortalized. Among my favorites is the one pictured above of the famous Ponte Vecchio in Florence. Chad and I awoke at 4:30 a.m.–we couldn’t have done it without the help of Hotel Bernini Palace staff who knew that we just couldn’t leave without capturing this image of the bridge as the sun began to cast its glow across the city of Florence. The two morning wake-up calls came exactly at the right time. Chad and I strategically positioned ourselves on another bridge that paralleled Ponte Vecchio–complete with the camera and tripod, and waited for the sun to rise. We waited and waited and waited for the morning cloud cover to subside. This shot was taken at approximately 7:16 a.m. on July 22nd. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. All I can add is, can you imagine how Italy’s beauty, spirit, passion~the soul of its people~ will only be even more magnified when we capture it on film–moving pictures that is–in spectacular high definition! We can’t wait to return in September as we compose our “Love Letter to Italy” entitled, LA DOLCE VITA.

When you think life couldn’t possibly get any better–Well, guess what? It can, and it does!

GRAND HOTEL BAGLIONI,
A member of The Leading Hotels of the World

‘Escapeseeker’ and Maggie Garrett being personally guided through Bologna’s city square by the Grand Hotel Baglioni’s own Resident Manager, Tiberio Biondi.

We are extremely grateful to you Tiberio, for the work and effort you put forth on our behalf in order that we could fully appreciate the unique characteristics of your beautiful city–even going all out and climbing a 60-meters Tower with us! Now that’s beyond the call of duty! Tiberio, we are truly convinced that you do LOVE your job. We can’t wait to return and film the ESCAPESEEKER cooking segment with your own Executive Chef, Pasquale. I’ve never had so much fun cooking. And, yes, Maggie and I definitely need to shop for another “cooking segment-friendly” wardrobe. 🙂 Our team has never eaten so much as we did in Bologna. Is that why they call it, Italy’s food capital?

To all of our ESCAPESEEKER Fans–take note: BOLOGNA is full of outstanding restaurants–outdoor, indoor, countryside, elegant–like the Carracci at the Grand Hotel–or casual like the Osteria, near the town square where you can dine on the street while sitting around barrells used as table tops. Whatever you’re in the mood for–you can find it. And don’t worry about your sudden weight gain! Bologna has miles and miles of covered walkways where you can walk or run to your heart’s content–no matter what the weather– and melt those extra pounds right off!

Just one of the many beautiful suites at the Grand Hotel Baglioni

The elegant CARRACCI RESTAURANT

With wi-fi capabilities at the Grand Hotel Baglioni, I was
able to do a lot of writing right in my own suite’s private terrace.

BOLOGNA, Italy–Take a deep breath, close your eyes and prepare to behold–THE GRAND HOTEL BAGLIONI! After awakening before dawn in Florence in order that we could capture images of the sun rising as it slowly cast a nice glow over the postcard perfect Florentine city, our ESCAPESEEKER team packed up and began our train journey to our next destination–BOLOGNA–ITALY’S FOOD CAPITAL! It was a brief and pleasant train ride via Eurostar–exactly what our team needed–just a moment to catch our breath and think about the wonderful adventure that awaits us. Upon arriving at Bologna’s train station, we were immediately greeted by a handsome, immaculately dressed, member of the Grand Hotel Baglioni staff, ready to assist our crew. (They’re always a welcome site because as we go from ESCAPESEEKER location to location–as it seems that our luggage also grows in size with each stop! 🙂 Our photographer, Chad Buchanan, and I noticed that everyone around us are always so tastefully attired. As he noted, “They all look like they just came out of GQ!” After a very quick ride in the spotless, luxurious Mercedes, we arrived at our hotel–THE GRAND HOTEL BAGLIONI, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. I’ve barely been in my luxurious sunlit suite, complete with a terrace overlooking the city–just a few minutes–and I can totally understand why they are a part of this exclusive membership! But don’t take my word for it. The photos above speak volumes.

Chad and I, along with Nicole, his superb partner, and our experienced Baglioni ESCAPESEEKER advisor, Maggie Garratt, are thrilled to have this opportunity to explore the food capital of Italy. We quickly discovered that Stay tuned, as we capture hundreds of images–and I do mean hundreds upon hundreds at each location. Italy is absolutely photo friendly…we’ve experienced, savored one “Kodak Moment” after another! Oh please, come and join us as we live this blessed adventure, moment by moment, a once in a lifetime experience we call, LA DOLCE VITA!

Ciao, and remember, as you travel to “Be The Kindest Person You Know!”

Hillside view of this magnificent Florentine city!
The Frescobaldi Family Estate in Tuscany

Hello ESCAPESEEKER fans…

I’ve just finished responding to all of the urgent ESCAPESEEKER TV series related e-mails, and it is now nearly 2 a.m. I can’t believe it is no longer my birthday! Rats! However, my computer tells me that it is only 4:55 in Newport Beach, so I guess I can choose which time zone to abide by…or just keep on celebrating and have a birthday month! YEAH, that sounds better…so if you’re reading this from the U.S., don’t think you’re getting out of celebrating my very big birthday ok?

Seriously, before I finally climb into bed, I must share one of the most unique Tuscan experience we’ve had thus far. I apologize for being a little slow in updating my blog today.

My team and I just returned from Tuscany where we were hosted to an exquisite day, by the illustrious Frescobaldi family whose history dates back 700 years! The youngest of the Frescobaldi sons, Matteo, is participating in our ESCAPESEEKER program–so we will be returning to film at their Tuscan estate in September.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the FRESCOBALDI name–let me give you some insight into this exceptional Florentine/Tuscan family:

The Frescobaldi name is renowned throughout Italy (and other parts of the world also) for their long standing tradition of involvement in the art, culture, and history of Italy and of Tuscany that stretches back more than 700 years. The Frescobaldi family includes authors, explorers, musicians, financiers, as well as politicians and statesmen.

A dedication to viticulture and to agriculture in general has always been a major characteristic of the family: for fully 30 generations, beginning in the very first years of the 14th century, the Frescobaldis have been producing wine in Tuscany, as attested by countless historical sources!

Even as early as the 16th century the Florentine family was a supplier of wines to the Royal English Court and to many other courts throughout Europe. Letters and legal papers in the family archives document during the 13th century, contacts and business contracts with many European monarchs, among them Henry VIII of England.

Well today, July 21, 2008, I too felt like a member of a monarch while dining with my ESCAPESEEKER team and MATTEO FRESCOBALDI! The photo of the Tuscan villa above is where our ESCAPESEEKER team spent my birthday. Now, that’s just one more special day to add to my journal of life.

Thank you friends and family for your warm and loving wishes…and thank you ROY for the gorgeous flowers and sweet, loving poem…I will have our photographer take a photo of them. You will not believe how BIG Florentine rose buds are!!

Well, I’ve really gotta hit the sack…we depart early tomorrow morning for Italy’s food capital, BOLOGNA–that is after we shoot a sunrise over Florence at around 5 a.m. No sleep for these serious ESCAPESEEKERS!

With all my love,

ESCAPESEEKER

It’s Saturday, This must be FIRENZE!

The Tuscan Suite in the Hotel Bernini Palace. I love my suite!

A great gathering place–The Brunello
HOTEL BERNINI PALACE where guests get the ROYAL TREATMENT!

Firenze, Italy–We were greeted with a BANG…Literally…We were just beginning to pull our suitcases away from the train station in Florence, when suddenly, we heard a very loud bang that sounded like a gun. Out of reflex, I actually found myself ducking. Our photographer and his fiancee also quickly looked around to see if anyone around us had dropped to the ground. What a relief it was to discover that it was actually the electrical wires connected to the train had shorted out. Clearly, our ESCAPESEEKER team has been watching too many ‘Jason Bourne’ films (Thanks Roy) 🙂

Florence is FABULOUSLY BEAUTIFUL…even with the crowds who flock here…who can blame them? It’s a must see, must do, top ten item on everyone’s “bucket list.” And, if you visit Florence, I absolutely recommend staying at the HOTEL BERNINI PALACE. You will feel the Tuscan spirit the minute you enter…and wait until you see the rooms. The one of a kind, tailor-made leather furnishings will remind you why Florence has also become world renowned for their leather artisans. There’s this golden brown leather trunk that sits at the foot of my bed–it is the entire width of my bed–oh my gosh, stunning! How I would love to bring that home!

Here you go, you can take a peak of what Florence is like via HOTEL BERNINI’s website:

http://www.baglionihotels.com/pages/copy_experience_firenze.jsp

Gotta run now. They’re taking us to a restaurant right in the heart of the city for a little lunch before we venture into the countryside to enjoy a summer concert by Andrea Bocelli. Speaking of summer–should you decide to visit Florence in the peak of summer, make sure you take very light, breezy, cotton clothing. A great hat to protect your face from the sun combined with protective sunglasses is also a good idea.

I’ll write again very soon,

Sending lots of love and Tuscan sunshine to all,

Escapeseeker
