My Heart Is Overjoyed As Europe Opens Its Doors: What You Need To Know Before You Go.

I am ready to return to bask in Italy’s glorious sunshine, to visit the places that hold so many special memories for me, but most of all, I am looking forward to once again reconnecting with my Italian friends who are like family to me. What the unprecedented challenges brought on by the global pandemic has taught me–we must savor every day we are granted–to see and do and embrace the wonderful people with whom we share our earthly space. Like many of you, the green light to travel again could not come soon enough. With my newly-renewed, hot off the press, crisp, 50-page passport in hand, along with my “proof of vaccination” card, I’m ready to cross the big pond!

READY, SET, GO! #mypassport I list amongst my most treasured possessions.

There’s no relief quite the feeling you get when your new passport finally arrives in the mail ready to be filled with stamps from all over the world! My previous passport was set to expire in 6 months, plus there was only one unstamped page remaining.

The landscape of travel has changed immensely, and it may never return to the way it once was. The most important advise I can give you–be prepared before you go. Please permit me to share with you the voluminous findings I have discovered as I prepare for my first Covid-era visit abroad, in hopes that I’ll save you some of the anguish I have experienced–and replace it with peace of mind and joyful anticipation as we prepare to Get Ready, Set, Go!

The Important Steps To Take Before You Go

Venice

Once you determine where you want to go, get the latest facts, directly from each respective country what their entry and exit requirements are. For example, for Italy, here are the details you need to know before you go:

Traveling To Italy: Italy applies health-related restriction measures to incoming travelers, which may vary depending on your country of origin.

Before entering Italy, from any country of origin and for any travel reason, the digital European Passenger Locator Form (dPLF) must be compiled.

Travellers from EU countries, the Schengen area, Great Britain and Israel can enter Italy without any quarantine obligation, provided that:

they fill in the Passenger Locator Form before entering Italy
on arrival, present a negative result for a molecular or antigenic swab taken no more than 48 hours prior to entry into Italy
notify arrival to the Prevention Department of the Local Health Authority (toll-free numbers and regional information)

Entry and transit in Italy are forbidden for persons:

who, in the previous fourteen days, have stayed or transited in Brazil (see exceptions)
who arrive from or have stayed in the previous fourteen days in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (see exceptions)

Travelers from all other countries may be required to:

fill in the Passenger Locator Form before entering Italy
present a negative result for a molecular or antigenic swab taken no more than 72 hours prior to entry into Italy
notify arrival to the Prevention Department of the Local Health Authority (toll-free numbers and regional information)
reach the final destination in Italy only by private means of transport
undergo fiduciary isolation and health surveillance for 10 days
at the end of the 10 day isolation, take an additional molecular or antigenic swab

Travelers arriving from some non-EU countries can enter Italy without undergoing fiduciary isolation and health surveillance provided they use COVID-tested flights (refer to the specific section).

You can find out the conditions of entry into Italy from your country with a couple of clicks at viaggiaresicuri.it You will be asked to indicate:

Country of origin
Country(ies) you have travelled through in the last 14 days
Possession of EU citizenship or citizenship of a country in the Schengen Area
Possession of registered residence in Italy as a long-term resident or kinship with a long-term resident residing in Italy

At the end of this process, you will be informed if there are any restrictions in place for travel to Italy from your country, the documentation you will have to present and the conditions applied on your arrival.

National information line 1500 was activated by the Italian Ministry of Health to answer questions from the public about the novel Coronavirus 2019-nCoV. The hotline is open 24/7.

COVID-TESTED FLIGHTS

Passengers traveling on COVID-tested flights authorized by the Ministry of Health can enter Italy without having to comply with health surveillance and fiduciary isolation obligations.

Passengers traveling on “COVID-tested” flights are required:

to present a certificate to the airline on boarding and its control personnel testifying a negative result for a molecular or antigen swab test taken no more than 48 hours prior to boarding
to fill in the Passenger Locator Form to be presented before boarding
take another molecular (RT PCR) or antigenic swab test on arrival at the destination airport

Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and Alitalia offer COVID-tested flights from the USA to Italy. For further information and a list of routes operating COVID-tested flights, consult the Ministry of Health website.

FACE MASK AND DISTANCING

Throughout Italy, it is mandatory to wear a mask in public places indoors. The mask is also mandatory outdoors, except in cases where you are isolated from people who do not live together. In Lazio it is mandatory to wear a mask outdoors in any situation.

Those who are not required to wear masks:
– people who are carrying out sports activities
– children under the age of 6
– people with disabilities or conditions incompatible with the use of a mask; carers or care workers are not obliged to wear masks, in the event that the mask makes it impossible to interact between carers/care workers and persons with disabilities. The use of the mask is also recommended inside houses, in the presence of non-cohabiting people.

It is mandatory to maintain the safe distance of at least one metre from non-cohabiting people.

Some squares or streets may be closed to the public throughout the day or at certain time slots to avoid gatherings. Access to these squares or streets is allowed only to reach open shops and private houses.

It is recommended to limit travel, by public or private transport, for reasons of work, study, health, for reasons of necessity or to take advantage of services not suspended.

It is also recommended to download the Immuni app, created by the Ministry of Health and the Minister of Technological Innovation to limit the spread of Covid-19.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Italo The means of public transport can operate with 50% of passengers.

TRAVELING BY CAR

It is possible to travel by car without limitations together with spouses, cohabitants and stable relationships.

Non-cohabiting people

You can travel by car with up to 3 non-cohabiting people including the driver. Everyone in the car must wear a mask.
The passenger seat next to the driver must remain free. Passengers must sit on opposite sides of the rear seat leaving the centre seat free. If the car has several rear rows, it can accommodate a maximum of two passengers per row seated on opposite sides of the seat, leaving the center seat free.

TRAVEL AROUND ITALY

To ensure the safety of residents and tourists, the Italian government has introduced a classification of regions based on the colors white (minimum risk), yellow, orange and red (maximum risk).

Each color corresponds to specific precautionary measures which regulate the freedom of movement within the region, movement between regions, and the opening of businesses, restaurants and cultural sites.

Movement between different regions in the white and yellow zones will be permitted.

Movement between different regions in the orange and red areas is allowed only for reasons of work, healthcare or proven urgency, with a self-certification indicating the reason for the move, or upon presentation of a COVID-19 green certification.

COVID-19 GREEN CERTIFICATIONS

The COVID-19 Green Certificate is only valid in Italy and certifies:

that you have been vaccinated against COVID-19
that you have recovered from COVID-19 infection
that you have tested negative in a rapid molecular or antigen test

Vaccination certification is valid for nine months after completion of the vaccination cycle: if the vaccine envisages two doses, the nine-month validity period therefore begins with the administration of the second dose. Certification is also issued after the first dose; in this case, validity begins fifteen days after administration and expires upon administration of the second dose.
Certification of full health recovery is valid for six months. Certification of COVID-19 negativity is valid for 48 hours.

Green certification is required to move from one region of white or yellow to another region of orange or red color in the absence of work, health or proven urgency. In some cases you may need to have a green certificate in order to access particular events or shows, including sporting events in stadiums.

Certification is required for all subjects over two years of age.

You can apply for a COVID-19 green pass: through the health centre, doctor or health worker who administered the vaccine or the pertinent Regional Health Service; through the Local Health Authority (ASL), the health centre where you were hospitalized following COVID-19 infection or, if you were not hospitalized, your general practitioner or paediatrician; through the public or private health centre or pharmacy where you took the molecular or rapid antigen test (swab).

Italy recognizes as valid the green passes issued by other European Union member states.

DIGITAL GREEN CERTIFICATE (DGC)

The Digital Green Certificate (DGC) allows all travelers to move around freely within the European Union.

For travelers who wish to enter Italy, it will only be possible to use the DGC certificate after the creation of the Italian platform, which will be made official in coming weeks. Until such date, the instructions in the “Traveling in Italy” section at the top of this page must be followed.

MEASURES VALID IN “WHITE ZONE” REGIONS

Measures valid in Abruzzo, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Molise, Sardinia, Umbria, Veneto.

There are no time restrictions for travel.

The obligation to wear masks and maintain a safety distance of 1 meter still apply.

Bars, pubs, restaurants, ice cream parlors and pastry shops are open. They must display a sign indicating the maximum number of people allowed inside simultaneously.
Consumption at table is always allowed. There is no limit to the number of people who may sit at the same outdoor table. Up to a maximum of 6 non-cohabiting people may sit together indoors; there are no limits to the number of people for 2 families who decide to dine together at the same table.

The following venues are now open to the public:

indoor and outdoor swimming pools
outdoor and indoor sporting events
trade fairs, conferences and congresses
fitness and spa centers
theme and amusement parks
private parties, including those associated with civil and/or religious ceremonies,
outdoors and indoors
gaming halls and betting shops, bingo halls and casinos

For all other activities, measures valid in the yellow zone apply to the white zone (see the specific section).

MEASURES VALID IN “YELLOW ZONE” REGIONS

The rest of Italy is currently in the “yellow zone”.

MOVING OUTSIDE YOUR HOME

You may only go outdoors between 05:00 to 24:00.

As of 21 June 2021, there will be no time limits regarding mobility.

PUBLIC PLACES

Bars, pubs, restaurants, ice cream parlors, pastry shops shall remain open. They must display a sign indicating the maximum number of people allowed inside at any particular time.
Consumption at table in restaurants is allowed both outdoors and indoors. No more than 4 people may sit at the same table, unless they co-habit. Home delivery of food is always allowed and also, until midnight, takeaway catering, with a ban on consumption at the premises or in the vicinity.

There are no time limits for restaurants in hotels and other hospitality establishments, as long as the service is limited to customers staying on the premises.
Bars, restaurants and similar businesses remain open within service and refueling areas along motorways, in hospitals and at airports.

Discotheques and dance halls are closed.

Arcades, betting centers, bingo halls and casinos will re-open to the public on 1 July.

BEACHES

Access to free beaches and equipped beaches is allowed.

Beach resort facilities may request reservations in order to access beaches. Measurement of body temperature is envisaged at the entrance. Each beach umbrella must have a free space of at least 10 square meters around it. The minimum distance between each deckchair or sun lounger must be at least one and a half meters. Individual sports such as beach tennis, swimming and surfing are allowed, provided that social distancing is observed. Masks are mandatory in common areas (bars, restaurants, etc.) as well as indoors. They are not mandatory on the beach provided you are at a safe distance from other persons.

On free beaches, the distance of at least one meter from other people must be upheld. When setting up umbrellas and deck chairs, the same indications as for beach resort facilities must be followed.

SWIMMING POOLS AND WELLNESS CENTERS

Outdoor swimming pools can be accessed by a limited number of people and preferably on booking.

Indoor swimming pools and wellness centers will be open from 1 July.

SHOPS

The shops shall remain open, and must display a sign indicating the maximum number of people allowed inside at any particular time.
Shopping centers may also remain open at weekends and on holidays and pre-holidays.

HOTELS AND ACCOMMODATION FACILITIES

The accommodation facilities are open, subject to compliance with social distancing, and as per protocols and guidelines adopted to prevent or reduce the risk of contagion.

MUSEUMS AND PLACES OF CULTURE

Museums and other cultural institutions are also open on weekends. From Monday to Friday the admissions are limited to a maximum number of people (which varies depending on the capacity of the museum), in compliance with health prevention measures. For weekend visits you need to book online or by phone.

CINEMA, THEATERS AND CONCERTS

It is possible to attend the shows in cinemas, theatres, concert halls and other venues, including outdoor venues. The maximum number of spectators must not exceed 50% of the maximum authorised capacity, and in any case, may not exceed 1,000 people for outdoor performances and 500 people for indoor performances. The seating plan must ensure a distance of at least one metre between spectators.

SPORTING EVENTS

Outdoor sporting events are open to the public. Indoor sporting events are open to the public as of 1 July. Indoor sporting events are open to the public as of 1 July. The maximum number of spectators must not exceed 25% of the maximum authorized capacity, and in any case may not exceed 1000 people for outdoor venues and 500 people for indoor venues. Seating must ensure a distance of at least one metre between non-cohabiting spectators.

TRADE FAIRS, CONFERENCES AND CONGRESSES

From 15 June, trade fairs are allowed. From 1 July, it is also possible to organize conferences and congresses, subject to compliance with precautionary health measures.

THEME PARKS AND AMUSEMENT PARKS

Theme and amusement parks will be able to reopen to the public as of 15 June.

Phoenix, Arizona ~ Here we are, already deep into the second month of 2014, and I have yet to complete our 2013 BEST DESTINATIONS LIST. Well, I’ve decided to let these photographs tell our story for as they say, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” These images speak volumes about why we feel so blessed to be part of this incredible mind-expanding, soul-enriching, gratitude-instilling, friendship-building adventure! Thank you all for helping turn our dreams into reality. The more we travel, the more we realize how much there is that we do not know. January was off to such a great start, and with my role as ESCAPESEEKER Guest Speaker on board the m/s Paul Gauguin, and with our TAHITI: OH HEAVEN’S HEAVEN film presentations so well-attended by our fellow passengers, my Executive Assistant, Melody Clyde and I decided to extend our cruise dates so I can continue in my role as Guest Speaker. Frankly, it did not take much convincing to remain on board. The hardest part was finally deciding to disembark at the end of February! But not before I was afforded the opportunity to visit the highly awaited, most eco-friendly luxury resort on the island of Tetiaroa–yes, the private island of one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, Marlon Brando–thus the name, THE BRANDO!

I was flown by Mr. Richard Bailey from Papeete to Tetiaroa in his private plane which he piloted. How cool is that? As we approached the island, I quietly took in this extraordinary moment. There I was about to land on Marlon Brando’s slice of Tahitian paradise–a former retreat reserved for Tahitian Royals, with Tahiti’s most respected hotelier, and the man Brando personally entrusted to transform his revered island into the ultimate earth-friendly hideaway. Even though my recently injured right foot was well on its way to healing, I decided to keep it protected as Mr. Bailey showed me around the construction site, explaining all the revolutionary, eco-friendly methods they were putting into application to adhere to all of Brando’s strict specifications. I can’t wait to return when it officially opens this July, 2014. I have a feeling the list of guests eager to set foot on THE BRANDO is getting longer by the day. After being impressed with the “before” visit, I can only imagine what the “after” final version will be. Look out world, get ready to add one more “must do” to your Bucket List!

Tahitian actress Tarita Teriipia, who played his love interest in Mutiny on the Bounty, became Brando’s third wife on August 10, 1962.

Although I was still recovering from a foot injury, I wasn’t about to let that get in the way of seeing first hand what the “The Brando” buzz was all about! I’m so glad I did. Let me give you advance notice: This is one “island escape” you’ll definitely want to experience in 2014!

This is what I call, “Guilt-Free Luxury” in the ultimate Tahitian Island PARADISE.

Great care is continually taken to protect the island’s natural habitat. The Tetiaroa Society, a non-profit organization is dedicated to research, conversation, and education related to the delicate ecology of the atoll.
The goal of this organization is to create a scientific and educational window into the biodiversity of Tetiaroa, with the possibility of developing controlled eco-tourism and raising public awareness regarding the fragility of our biodiversity.

2013 definitely started on the right footing, even with one foot in a cast! I’m continually inspired by the tireless visionaries who go to great lengths to create meaningful travel experiences that are worthy of our hard-earned vacation currency. More than ever, I am driven to seek out those destinations that adhere to our ESCAPESEEKER mantra of being “the greatest luxury escapes in the world.” Just when we thought it could not get any better, our 2013 itinerary turned into a series of dream experiences. The best part, it wasn’t a dream at all, but a reality we cannot wait to capture on film and share with the rest of the world. Thank you all so much for your unwavering support and continued enthusiasm for this insatiable passion for our majestic planet that we all share. JULY…Birthday Wish Come True

Returning to the most famous “floating city” in the world…The Land of Serenissima — VENEZIA!

We rejoin the m/v TERE MOANA…this time it’s the “Chairman’s Cruise” and we’re bound for the Dalmatian Coast of CROATIA!

After covering several continents in three months, I decided I'm due for a birthday celebration...a birthday rest is more like it...but a true ESCAPESEEKER does not rest from travel. HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME...I'm off once again to the dramatically beautiful islands of TAHITI!

This hammock is exactly where I began to ponder how I would spend the next decade of my life…all the while feeling forever grateful for the tremendous opportunities I’ve been granted to see the world…to learn and embrace cultures different from my own…to discover the beautiful human traits that unite us…and gain a better understanding my fellow beings. What can be better for a birthday gift than the gift of a GRATEFUL HEART?

SEPTEMBER…Finds me crossing the Atlantic again…this time I am bound for ISTANBUL!

OCTOBER…A Season of Learning

After my premiere visit to Istanbul, I prepared for my long-awaited French language extensive immersion program at Alliance française Paris Ile-de-France. Yes! I’m finally going to tackle the French language 24/7. With the kind generosity and hospitality of my life-long friend, Paris native Dominique Caffin-Robert, I found myself in the City of Lights…ready to be schooled in its difficult language…and, for the next six weeks, I would be thinking…talking…dreaming…eating…reading…and playing in French!

Find my way around Paris...on foot...via metro...was a worthwhile learning adventure in itself. By week two, there was no such thing as being lost...only diverted slightly...because with Paris' superb Metro system, you can always find your way!

Within a matter of weeks, my classmates comprised of students from around the world, found ourselves celebrating the successful passage into the next phase of our French immersion program! Super!

New Class…guaranteed new friends…we were all in the same boat…eager to master this increasingly difficult language!

NOVEMBER…And, I’m officially excused from school…

I was never very good at playing hookie from school, so when I told my teacher I had a previous ESCAPESEEKER assignment I needed to adhere to, she handed me an official absence request form to fill out. That’s so French right? I mean, the form was in French, and I was required to fill it out in French as well. By the time I finished, I knew I had made great advances in the language and could now thoroughly enjoy my ESCAPE to the DANUBE on board the AMAPrima Waterways. Germany, Austria, Hungary…here I come!

The entire AMAPrima Waterways experience was simply EXTRAORDINARY in every regard. By the time we anchored in Budapest, our final stop, I knew I had made some life-long friends. There is something about traveling that brings like-minded, joyful (generally) people together eager to embrace all aspects of a full, vibrant LIFE! At least, that’s what I found on board the AMAPrima…a day doesn’t go by when I don’t miss my newfound AMAfriends! At the end of the day, that’s the real treasure–the friendships we derive from cruising!

If you wish to make new friends who share your insatiable passion for life, then I recommend you consider cruising with the AMAWaterways fleet! I’ve never met so many tremendously engaging, fun individuals under one roof. I kid you not!

HELLO BUDAPEST! Another Bucket List item checked off! To see her illuminated was a goose bump producing moment. I was packing in my stateroom when I suddenly realized what was right before me. I grabbed my camera, stepped onto my balcony and just went into photographer’s dream mode! With every click I found myself saying, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

Now is this a magnificent close to an unforgettable week or what? AMAWaterways sure knows how to script. I cannot wait to capture it all on high definition cinematic film someday soon!

HELLO PARIS! ONE FINAL WEEK BEFORE I SAY…Au Revoir…

No matter the season…Paris, je t’aime!

PARIS…was an incredibly healthy experience for me in so many ways. The more miles I walked each day, the healthier my formerly shattered right foot became. My excess weight also melted away. Maybe, it was from the excessive use of my brain trying to conquer French? 🙂 Paris is the kind of city where you never, ever feel alone…because dining solo is often as enjoyable as dining with a crowd! It’s not an easy city…but it’s an inspiring one! I found myself writing volumes about what I saw…what I experienced…and what I wanted to remember forever!

My last night was spent at my all-time favorite hotel–the SHANGRI-LA HOTEL-PARIS. With its magnificent unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower at every angle, and the consistently impeccable service and attention to detail, not to mention the quiet residential location…For me, it is simply the perfect place to feel totally Parisien…a rather pampered Parisien that is!

DECEMBER…A Time of Giving…Brings me to the BIG APPLE…NEW YORK CITY.

As my incredibly remarkable year was coming to a close…I knew there was one more important obligation I had to fulfill…my commitment to help with the annual United Nations Ambassadors Ball–a highly anticipated event orchestrated by the Hospitality Committee for the United Nations Delegation. Their mission is as follows:

To promote and strengthen understanding and friendly ties between all levels of the United Nations diplomatic community and the people of New York.
To assist newly arrived UN diplomats and their families adjust to their new life in New York by providing information and programs that reduce language and cultural barriers.
To broaden an appreciation of American culture and customs among UN diplomats and their families, thereby enhancing the reputation of the United States and the United Nations.

All of the above resonates with our ESCAPESEEKER philosophy of following the Golden Rule, “Do unto others, what you would have others do unto you.” It’s a lofty and worthwhile goal, so of course ESCAPESEEKER offered to do our part to assist with the event. After all, “To whom much is given, much is required.”

2013 Theme: Mission Possible…Conquering the Unexpected

When an unfortunate accident turned my size six right foot into size 7.5 complete with 10 screws and 2 plates, and with its accompanying recovery period that subsequently derailed our 2012 filming season, I was determined to get back on track in 2013, no matter what it took! Once my newly renamed, “Robofoot” could travel, black/gray mega boot, crutches and all, I knew there was one place that would assist in my healing, both physically and spiritually: French Polynesia! So, I embarked on a series of voyages on board the m/s Paul Gauguin, serving as a “Guest Speaker” and sharing our TAHITI: OH HEAVEN’S HEAVEN series with the enthusiastic guests. After all, how can you not love watching a film about the breathtaking places you know you’re about to experience first hand? The entire experience of being amongst such joyful passengers and crew who shared my insatiable passion for the islands, and swimming daily in those healing French Polynesian turquoise waters was exactly what my foot (and my soul) needed to bring me back to full ESCAPESEEKER form!

Fast forward, April 15, 2013 and I’m absolutely ready to tackle not one continent, but four continents in just three months. I began in Asia [Hong Kong], followed by South America [Peru], and continuing on to Europe [France], with a quick return to North America [Utah] so I can orchestrate a beautiful wedding for my daughter, Joanna, and then returning to Europe to begin an extensive exploration of Greece, Italy [including The Vatican], Croatia, and back to Italy. The journey wasn’t pain-free, but I quickly discovered that I was tougher than I ever imagined. More importantly, I found the continuous blessing of seeing one breathtaking vista after another, and meeting so many, many engaging inspiring, talented individuals at every turn only fueled my resolve that 2013 will be the very best ESCAPESEEKER season yet! Perhaps, in part, it may be because I have a far greater appreciation for restored health…for the opportunity to travel…to explore the world on two feet, something I will never ever take fore granted again.

With God’s tender mercy, and with the tireless assistance of my ESCAPESEEKER team as well as the continued, generous support of tremendous entities from around the world, we will continue to seek out the greatest destinations, and prove again and again that there’s no destination on earth too far, too difficult, or too SPECTACULAR to reach! I feel it a tremendous privilege, albeit also a great responsibility to correctly represent each country I write about, and subsequently film for our PBS SoCal TV Series. For the next few weeks, I will be devoting a segment on each of the destinations we researched, so I can properly do them justice. I hope you’ll continue to visit my ESCAPESEEKER blog as I share the incredible images and story after story of some of the world’s most interesting, unique places…some of which are still barely known…hidden gems waiting to be discovered by adventure-seeking, travel enthusiasts just like you! We will be returning to film these destinations in the coming weeks, and I have no doubt my avid cinematographers upon seeing these awe-inspiring places will once again refer to me as their “Fairy Godmother.”
