BOLOGNA, Italy–Take a deep breath, close your eyes and prepare to behold–THE GRAND HOTEL BAGLIONI!
After awakening before dawn in Florence in order that we could capture images of the sun rising as it slowly cast a nice glow over the postcard perfect Florentine city, our ESCAPESEEKER team packed up and began our train journey to our next destination–BOLOGNA–ITALY’S FOOD CAPITAL! It was a brief and pleasant train ride via Eurostar–exactly what our team needed–just a moment to catch our breath and think about the wonderful adventure that awaits us. Upon arriving at Bologna’s train station, we were immediately greeted by a handsome, immaculately dressed, member of the Grand Hotel Baglioni staff, ready to assist our crew. (They’re always a welcome site because as we go from ESCAPESEEKER location to location–as it seems that our luggage also grows in size with each stop! 🙂 Our photographer, Chad Buchanan, and I noticed that everyone around us are always so tastefully attired. As he noted, “They all look like they just came out of GQ!” After a very quick ride in the spotless, luxurious Mercedes, we arrived at our hotel–THE GRAND HOTEL BAGLIONI, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. I’ve barely been in my luxurious sunlit suite, complete with a terrace overlooking the city–just a few minutes–and I can totally understand why they are a part of this exclusive membership! But don’t take my word for it. The photos above speak volumes.Chad and I, along with Nicole, his superb partner, and our experienced Baglioni ESCAPESEEKER advisor, Maggie Garratt, are thrilled to have this opportunity to explore the food capital of Italy. WHAT AN UNEXPECTED, TRULY ENLIGHTENING WAY TO SPEND AN "ESCAPESEEKER" BIRTHDAY!!!
Hillside view of this magnificent Florentine city!
The Frescobaldi Family Estate in Tuscany
I’ve just finished responding to all of the urgent
ESCAPESEEKER TV series related e-mails, and it is now nearly 2 a.m. I can’t believe it is no longer my birthday! Rats! However, my computer tells me that it is only 4:55 in Newport Beach, so I guess I can choose which time zone to abide by…or just keep on celebrating and have a birthday month! YEAH, that sounds better…so if you’re reading this from the U.S., don’t think you’re getting out of celebrating my very big birthday ok?Seriously, before I finally climb into bed, I must share one of the most unique Tuscan experience we’ve had thus far. I apologize for being a little slow in updating my blog today.
My team and I just returned from Tuscany where we were hosted to an exquisite day, by the illustrious Frescobaldi family whose history dates back 700 years! The youngest of the Frescobaldi sons, Matteo, is participating in our ESCAPESEEKER program–so we will be returning to film at their Tuscan estate in September.
For those of you who may not be familiar with the FRESCOBALDI name–let me give you some insight into this exceptional Florentine/Tuscan family:
The Frescobaldi name is renowned throughout Italy (and other parts of the world also) for their long standing tradition of involvement in the art, culture, and history of Italy and of Tuscany that stretches back more than 700 years. The Frescobaldi family includes authors, explorers, musicians, financiers, as well as politicians and statesmen.
A dedication to viticulture and to agriculture in general has always been a major characteristic of the family: for fully 30 generations, beginning in the very first years of the 14th century, the Frescobaldis have been producing wine in Tuscany, as attested by countless historical sources!
Even as early as the 16th century the Florentine family was a supplier of wines to the Royal English Court and to many other courts throughout Europe. Letters and legal papers in the family archives document during the 13th century, contacts and business contracts with many European monarchs, among them Henry VIII of England.
Well today, July 21, 2008, I too felt like a member of a monarch while dining with my ESCAPESEEKER team and MATTEO FRESCOBALDI! The photo of the Tuscan villa above is where our ESCAPESEEKER team spent my birthday. Now, that’s just one more special day to add to my journal of life.
Thank you friends and family for your warm and loving wishes…and thank you ROY for the gorgeous flowers and sweet, loving poem…I will have our photographer take a photo of them. You will not believe how BIG Florentine rose buds are!!
Well, I’ve really gotta hit the sack…we depart early tomorrow morning for Italy’s food capital, BOLOGNA–that is after we shoot a sunrise over Florence at around 5 a.m. No sleep for these serious ESCAPESEEKERS!
With all my love,
ESCAPESEEKERIt’s Saturday, This must be FIRENZE!
The Tuscan Suite in the Hotel Bernini Palace. I love my suite!
A great gathering place–The Brunello
HOTEL BERNINI PALACE where guests get the ROYAL TREATMENT!
Florence is FABULOUSLY BEAUTIFUL…even with the crowds who flock here…who can blame them? It’s a must see, must do, top ten item on everyone’s “bucket list.” And, if you visit Florence, I absolutely recommend staying at the HOTEL BERNINI PALACE. You will feel the Tuscan spirit the minute you enter…and wait until you see the rooms. The one of a kind, tailor-made leather furnishings will remind you why Florence has also become world renowned for their leather artisans. There’s this golden brown leather trunk that sits at the foot of my bed–it is the entire width of my bed–oh my gosh, stunning! How I would love to bring that home!
Here you go, you can take a peak of what Florence is like via HOTEL BERNINI’s website:
http://www.baglionihotels.com/pages/copy_experience_firenze.jsp
Gotta run now. They’re taking us to a restaurant right in the heart of the city for a little lunch before we venture into the countryside to enjoy a summer concert by Andrea Bocelli. Speaking of summer–should you decide to visit Florence in the peak of summer, make sure you take very light, breezy, cotton clothing. A great hat to protect your face from the sun combined with protective sunglasses is also a good idea.
I’ll write again very soon,
Sending lots of love and Tuscan sunshine to all,
Escapeseeker
ESCAPESEEKER COMES FACE TO FACE WITH THE GIFTED ARTIST BEHIND ITALY’S FAMOUS HAUTE COUTURE, and who also happens to design for HIS HOLINESS!
The Colliseum–Chad Buchanan, our ESCAPESEEKER still
photographer when to great lengths to capture this image.
Chad stopped in his tracks when he witnessed these two
sisters praying in front of the Vatican at dusk.
Haute Couture Designer, Guillermo Mariotto, presenting
the vestments he designed for His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI
Audrey Hepburn’s exquisite “Empire gown” (pictured above) worn in the 1956 classic film, War and Peace, earned Fernanda Gattinoni, the Maison’s founder, an Oscar nomination.
Princess Grazia Borghese,
Internationally Renowned Jewelry Designer
For people like me who are a ‘slave to fashion’–it was truly a privilege to visit Maison Gattinoni, a house who has dedicated itself to the art of fashion…we even met the gifted artisans who labor for hours hand crafting each creation, under the direction of Guillermo. One tailor has worked for Gattinoni for 50 years. She started when she was 14!
Guillermo was an absolute delight. Both he and Princess Borghese are ready-made for television–so easy to interview–with outstanding soundbite after soundbite–stories that only insiders of fashion can share. For instance, how many designers receive the honor of creating the vestments for His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI during the Holy Father’s visit to Assisi in 2007 to mark the eighth centenary of the conversion of Saint Francis? Yes, it was Guillermo Mariotto. It is also Guillermo who is among the celebrity judges of the Italian version of Dancing with the Stars, and Nights on Ice. I asked him if he was the equivalent of Idol’s Simon Cowell, and he just grinned with a giant smile, and answered, “YES!”
So make sure you stay tuned to ESCAPESEEKER’s premiere episode featuring Italy, and entitled, La Dolce Vita, and discover for yourselves the geniuses behind MAISON GATTINONI. For a sneak peak, I’ve posted a few of Princess Borghese’s designs which was recently featured on the catwalk of Santo Spirito in Sassia–a great display of fashion and emotions by Guillermo’s dresses and the precious creations of Princess Borghese. Long pearl necklaces, gold, tormaline and rubies. Ostrich eggs with opale of fire. Three thousand black diamonds on the Gattinoni’s catwalk proves nothing is spared to showcase the lasting legacy began by Fernanda GATTINONI, the undisputed protagonist of international fashion…and as everyone in Rome attest, fashion is an absolutely important element of La Dolce Vita!
Ciao,
Escapeseeker
Cari Amici…Arrivederci! I’m off to Rome for more of LA DOLCE VITA!
Oh Summer in Italy? Which means, it is going to be HOT, HOT, HOT! Perfezionare appena per questo ESCAPESEEKER! (Just perfect for this ESCAPESEEKER!)
Gotta run to catch my flight. Take great care, and stay in touch via my blog ok? Or, for you loyal ‘facebookers’, you can drop me a note via Facebook.
Sending you love and sunshine,
Ciao…

EDINBURGH TO BE FEATURED ON ESCAPESEEKER TV SERIES!
Hello ESCAPESEEKER fans…
http://www.thebalmoralhotel.com/
Ahh…the brutal life of an ESCAPESEEKER! 🙂 With our talented photographer, Chad Buchanan, (who by the way is already on the other side of the pond) we will capture the magic and “uniquely Scottish” spirit of Edinburgh. To give you an inkling, here’s a taste of Scottish poetry from “The Braes o’ Balquhither” by Robert Tannahill
Now the summer’s in prime
Wi’ the flowers richly blooming,
And the wild mountain thyme
A’ the moorlands perfuming.
To own dear native scenes
Let us journey together,
Where glad innocence reigns
‘Mang the braes o’ Balquhither.
I agree, ‘Let us journey together’!!!
See you in Scotland on July 28th!
But first, we must journey to Italy to complete our preparations for “La Dolce Vita”…
Please stay tuned!
Yours truly,
Escapeseeker
ESCAPESEEKER REVIEWS CONTINUE IN CONJUNCTION WITH ADVANCE RESEARCH FOR PREMIERE EPISODE ENTITLED, LA DOLCE VITA. NEXT STOP: ROME!
Oft as the morning ray
Visits these eyes, waking at once I cry,
Whence this excess of joy?
What has befallen me?
And from within a thrilling voice replies,
Thou art in Rome!
A thousand busy thoughts
Rush on my mind, a thousand images;
And I spring up as girt to run a race! Author, Samuel Rogers
Set in a Liberty style building on the famed via Veneto, in the heart of La Dolce Vita, it is complete with panoramic views of the city and close to the most famous sites of the Roman capital like Villa Borghese Gardens, Piazza di Spagna, and the church of Trinita dei Monti. And, just in case you’re in need of some “retail therapy”–the Hotel is extremely close to the famed shopping street via Condotti. It is no surprise that Regina Hotel is a favorite meeting place for the international jet set.
Oh How I Love being the ultimate “Escapeseeker!” By the way, we are scheduled to begin filming our premiere episode in September in one of the most photogenic cities in the world–VENICE! As many of you know, for a ‘water baby like me’ it’s only natural for me to be totally in love with Venice…as I’ve written before, “It was love at first sight!” So it is only apropos that for our premiere on-hour long ESCAPESEEKER special, that we follow my heart back to Venice. Come with me as we cruise the Grand Canal…or take in a magical concert beneath the stars at Piazza San Marco. With the Venice Film Festival in full force at that same time, who knows which Hollywood A-lister will end up joining for its many post premiere parties? No, you’re thinking Italy’s favorite son–George Clooney? Come on, not again. We’ve already partied with him before at Ciprianis…lasted until dawn. Let’s be original now. Let’s party at the beautiful Luna Baglioni. Oh my gosh, the food there at Canova Restaurant is BLISSFUL! If you are in the mood to be pampered, then walk to the 5-star Luna Baglioni and allow Chef Roberto to mesmerize your palate. You’ll totally understand the experience they call the Magic of Serenissima!
Why not experience it for yourself…learn more at www.baglionihotels.com
And, honestly, it will become perfectly clear why Roy and I are now considering moving the family headquarters to Italy! 🙂
Ciao Bella,
Mel aka Escapeseeker
WE ARE FEELING "OH SO LUCKY"…
“one hundred thousand welcomes”…
YOU CANNOT VISIT IRELAND WITHOUT GOING TO…
The ancient civilization of the Celts may have diminished, but their legacy to Western culture has been profound in terms of their bold, very proud approach to life, their wit and merriment~and their richly evocative music, poetry, art, mythology and literature. And just in case you were too busy “pubbing it” in Ireland, no worries, you’ll get one final chance to taste Irish literature. Where? Would you believe the departure terminal? What other airport in the world contains wall after wall of inscriptions~quotes and passages from some of the world’s greatest literature penned by none other than their own Irish geniuses. Make sure you allow enough time after you check in at Dublin airport to take a nice stroll through the terminal. Forget shopping…just start reading…you can’t miss it. The inscriptions are floor to ceiling and even includes an illustrated image of the author. Enjoy…you may even be inspired to pen your own creative genius!
There is so much to learn and discover about Ireland, that you must stay tuned–We return in July to do Part 2 of our research! So note that our “must do list” below is sure to grow after Part 2 is completed. While in Ireland, you must experience:
…its 5-star destination resort/hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Powerscourt with its heavenly beds, sensational ESPA, complete with a glistening black pool, and Gordon Ramsay restaurant offering his signature dishes,
…its oldest PUB, (By the way, we found pubs to have excellent Irish food),
…its places of worship…there are hundreds of cathedrals from which to choose,
…its great green countryside with clear emerald lakes–great for day or extended hiking too,
…its not so inviting frigid cold ocean–I felt it, frigid is an understatement, but the natives think nothing of diving into it for their daily swim,
…Bono’s favorite hotel (he owns this one located in the heart of Dublin, and it’s very popular with his peers–other musical artists too, so if you’re a Bono fan, this may be your best spot to get a Bono sighting 🙂
…and of course, while in Dublin, visit this unique statue, a tribute to one of its greatest literary minds, Oscar Wilde. It is located at Merrion Square Park. This may be the only statue in the history of statues both to totally capture the subject’s personality and do it in a way that would have delighted the author and playwright.
