MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH FILMING EXPERIENCE~PURE ARTISTRY

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Laguna's famed Keyhole Rock has been immortalized in many impressionist plein-air paintings...and as you will soon see in our "Art of Living" episode--I even decided to try my hand at it under the expert guidance of Laguna's renowned artist, Cynthia Britain.

Being taught by Laguna's master plein-air painter was a priceless experience...so much so that I've decided from now on to feature a renowned artist wherever we go. 🙂 They just see the world through a different set of gifted lenses...and I'm always hungry to learn, especially from the best! This experience truly gave me an understanding of why Laguna Beach became a haven for plein-air artists. Painting outdoors amidst such beauty is so therapeutic...time just flew by. I can't wait to show you my first ever "masterpiece" which is currently drying at Cynthia's studio. Do you have an undiscovered talent that you did not even know you possessed? Ok, I'm probably getting a little carried away here...All I know is I loved painting outdoors and watching my "impressionist art" come to life. Thank you Cynthia for sharing your gift and planting the "artist seed"...I'm ready to take root!

NATURE ABOUNDS ON THE GROUNDS OF MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH. Our photographer, Lisa Hensley documented several of these beautiful hummingbirds. I think they became very accustomed to her lens following them around on a daily basis!

A Very Happy Hummingbird...you would be too if you resided at Montage!

NO PASSPORT?  NO PROBLEM! –That is if you’re originating from the U.S.  Our ESCAPESEEKER team discovered what it’s like to experience “The Art of Living” for five fantastic days as we explored and embraced one of my favorite American ‘escape’ destinations–the artists’ enclave of LAGUNA BEACH!

On the corner of Forest Avenue where it meets with Pacific Coast Highway in the quaint village-like “downtown” portion of Laguna Beach, there’s a famous gate that was built in 1935 that can still be found today.  And, on it is engraved the following words:  “This Gate Hangs Well and Hinders None, Refresh and Rest, Then Travel On.”

Well, we were definitely not ready to travel on.  Our adventure had just begun, and where we were destined, you can truly “Refresh and Rest”…but that’s not all.  This Laguna Beach resort is often described as “a self-contained work of art”–which definitely works for us!  Can it be scripted any better for our film crew?  I don’t think so.

LUXURY WITH A CAPITAL “L”…Meet the Visionary behind MONTAGE

Our ESCAPESEEKER team has discovered time and time again that behind every incredible destination we have visited is a visionary–a man or woman who had the foresight to see beyond the obvious.  This holds true for MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH resort!

At MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH, even the swimming pool is a WORK OF ART! (Image by Lisa Hensley)

This is the Ocean View from the Loft South Patio~ (Image by Scott Frances) I highly recommend this spot for breakfast...and by the way, you must experience the Loft's Lobster Eggs Benedict. Simply Superb! And, less I forget, DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT HAVING A SLICE OF THE LOFT'S BANANA BREAD!!! It's legendary!

Once upon a time...Treasure Island Trailer Park transformed into MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH!

It is hard to imagine when you step onto its immaculately landscaped grounds and look out into this expanse of vintage California style architecture–presiding over 30 acres, high above the most magnificent stretch of California Riviera beach that graces the grand Pacific–that this was once a domain of trailers and mobile homes!  Well, now even the City of Laguna is quick to boast about their world-renowned resort!  But this was no easy feat–as a matter of fact it took about 15 years of wrangling with the City Planners to gain approval…and much of the credit goes to a single man, ALAN FUERSTMAN,  who rescued the project from its original developers and brought it into full fruition, establishing the name and brand that is now synonymous with impeccable service and luxury:  MONTAGE.

Alan Fuerstman, Founder of MONTAGE, stands at bluff's edge and explains what he envisoned right from the start...

I just had to smile upon learning that the very spot where we stood is exactly where Mr. Fuerstman likes to do his "best thinking". I am not surprised. The scenic view, the gentle ocean breezes, the soothing sound of the waves are harmoniously conducive to inspiration!

In case you’re wondering–Yes, we intentionally are not fully revealing Mr. Feurstman  in these pics!  After all, HELLO–we want you to watch the full episode to learn more about this visionary…who actually began his career as a “bellman”–Yes, truly,  Mr. Fuerstman’s story is the “American Dream” personified!  I know you’ll want to tune in to learn more about his inspiring story!

My film crew shadowed us as we explored the grounds of Montage...and learned first hand the kinds of challenges and eventual triumphs that an undertaking of this magnitude affords.

Speaking of stories, “The Art of Living” episode, we promise, will be filled with stories that will inspire you, make you laugh, and oh, one more thing–it will definitely make you hungry–because if there’s one thing I’ve learned to appreciate in this job–it’s GREAT CUISINE!

We’ll introduce you to Executive Chef Strong of STUDIO–the name is so apropos–after all Chef Strong leads a team of culinary artists and dining professionals!  Here’s a tiny sneak peak.

Chef Strong discusses what he is about to prepare...I could hardly contain my excitement!

Hands down, the very best BEET SALAD I've ever tasted! Chef Strong uses only the freshest ingredients, including miniature California oranges from his neighbor's tree. This dish is not only beautiful, but stock full of vitamins to help you stay healthy and strong. MONTAGE prides itself in affording every guest an opportunity to strive towards a total state of "well-being"--and nutritional California cuisine with a Mediterranean flair is just one of Chef Strong's specialty.

I'm still dreaming about this unforgettable, tenderly exquisite dish of scallops! Oh my gosh, this craving I'm having just looking at this pic is unbearable!

Thank you everyone for being such avid fans of our ESCAPESEEKER blog.  I promise, I will continue to strive to bring you the ultimate in BLISSFUL ESCAPES–whether across continents and oceans, or just down the road–with or without a passport, the travel opportunities are endless!

Please stay tuned as we bring you the greatest destinations in the world, one luxury ESCAPE at a time!

With love,

Mel aka ESCAPESEEKER

A GLIMPSE OF ENDLESS SUMMER FUN ON LAGUNA’S SHORES

Miristi prepares to try out the very special tailor-made MONTAGE Paddle Board for the very first time with Bennett's help.

JOSH of the STAND UP PADDLE BOARD COMPANY carefully monitoring our ESCAPESEEKER team's progress and condition! A rain storm had rolled in earlier that morning, but we weren't about to let a little rain, or wind, or cool, brisk waves keep us from having this much fun!

ESCAPESEEKER proves once again that age is but a number; we are never too old to learn a new skill...especially when it involves this much water fun! THANK YOU JOSH!

I decided to bring my own "Cheering Squad"--My grandbabies were so excited for their "Paddle Boarding Grandma"! Look at their faces--THAT IS PURE JOY! Our family has always found so much joy just frolicking near, or in the sea! We call it "Marine Therapy".

Our Photographer Lisa Hensley, captured some local action right in front of MONTAGE. So, this is how the LOCALS enjoy their beach at SUNSET! Nice, so very, very nice! This is SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA'S REALITY--LAGUNA BEACH PERFECTION!

POSTCRIPT:  A look back at these CREW CLIPS, also captured by  our “Have camera will travel” still photographer, Lisa Hensley…I just had to give you an inside glimpse on the incredibly hard working ESCAPESEEKER team whose valiant dedication and non-stop STAMINA  makes all of this possible!  Thank you CREW…could not do any of this without YOU!

And, Action!

Our Multi-tasking Director, Jason, is giving instructions to Bennett on how much "bounce" is required on our faces.

We start our days at the first sign of dawn, and by the late afternoon, our Producer, Christina is still smiling!

On board this OASIS IV sailboat is Executive Producer, "Mr. H"--also a seasoned sailor--good to know since it is also carrying our very expensive "Camera A" with talented Director of Photography, Jackson, and Producer Christina--who by the way not only shot our "showboat" The OASIS V from this vessell, but just hours later, boarded a Cessna 182 (with door removed) and flew above us to capture the stunning California Riviera coastline! It was a rather cold day for Christina who later recapped by saying, "I explored the Laguna Beach coastline by car, by boat and by plane, ALL IN ONE NOVEMBER DAY! Christina, we know it got pretty cold in that plane for you, flying without a door, and having to keep your eye on the monitor to make sure Jackson's shots were just perfect, and also making sure he and the camera did not sky dive out? We hope you have finally thawed out; the 12-13 hour days, full of excitement and the unexpected adventures--it's just another ESCAPESEEKER day!

If you think being a BOOM OPERATOR is an easy job, just ask Bennett! By the way, have you seen Bennett's biceps? That should give you a clue. It's not easy, especially when Jason calls out, "Bennett, keep it high and steady!" His response, "NO PROBLEM!"

This image proves once again that our Director, Jason will go to any length to get the perfect shot...especially when it involves getting into the water! 🙂 Even with the wave, the camera never left his hand nor his sight. Impressive boss!

Jackson, patiently waiting for us to set up the shot, and making sure our sound check is perfect!

After an entire day of sailing, yes, we're huddled together because we were really cold! Thanks Mr. H for buying the entire team extra fleece clothing when the weather changed on us. We would have shivered all day otherwise. It's so nice to have such a considerate Exec. Producer!

THANK YOU OASIS SAILING CLUB FOR AN EXCEPTIONALLY, INSPIRING SAILING DAY! This magnificent sunset alone is reason enough to sail the beautiful California coastline. This is just one of the many reasons WE LOVE CALIFORNIA!

What 14-hour days for 5 straight days? From our "final eve photo" one would never guess what our entire team has gone through just so we can hear those sweet words from our Director, "Mel, we have a show!" This is our entire "Art of Living" team, (minus Christina who had to leave earlier for her other Hollywood assignment). We were also very fortunate to meet and discover a young aspiring filmmaker, Drew Fuerstman during our shoot. Our entire team was so impressed with his knowledge and natural abilities that we asked him if he would like to give our team a hand for the rest of the shoot. Drew you were Heaven sent! May I suggest you remember his name--my entire team agrees that Drew is another budding "Spielberg"--kid you not!

Please stay tuned in the Spring of 2011, when our National Presenting Station, PBS Powerhouse, WQED presents ESCAPESEEKER and this "ART of LIVING" episode will totally come into FOCUS! Our special thanks to the entire MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH team for helping make the experience absolutely UNFORGETTABLE!

I guess now, we’re finally ready to follow the sentiments expressed on Laguna’s famous gate…REFRESH AND REST THEN TRAVEL ON,  as we continue to SEEK OUT THE GREATEST DESTINATIONS IN THE WORLD, ONE LUXURY ESCAPE AT A TIME!

ESCAPESEEKER DAY 1 of FILMING: "An Artist's Dream"

MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH — It’s 4:39 a.m. on Friday and our team is up and at it, preparing for another glorious day of filming on-site at MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH resort.  We’re blessed with fantastic, unseasonably warm November weather, and clear blue skies that afford us distant vistas across the Pacific…Catalina Island is in full view from my suite’s balcony.

November Sunset from Montage Laguna Beach

I’ve gotta run, but I just had to share these two images captured by our ESCAPESEEKER still photographer, LISA HENSLEY, of yesterday’s sunset as seen from MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH.  Have you ever seen sunsets this beautiful?  Come join us, and to think, if you reside in the U.S.–“No Passport?  No Problem?”  It is clear why Laguna Beach is truly an artists’ haven!

Have a STUNNING DAY…

Love,

Mel

ESCAPESEEKER SOON TO BEGIN THE TASK OF EXPLORING VIBRANT BRAZIL!

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

USA — Where does one begin with an assignment of this magnitude?  For me, I always turn to one of my favorite sources for reliable first hand insight:  National Geographic.  I grew up with Nat Geo, and our family’s subscription continues even today.  Here’s what Nat Geo has to say about BRAZIL:

If life is a beach, Brazil is its headquarters. • Its first overseas visitors, from Portugal, wisely dedicated their attention to the glorious coastline, ignoring the jungly interior. • It is a big place, larger by far than the United States, claiming tenancy rights in most of the eastern half of South America. • Claiming more than 160 million souls, it has almost as many citizens as the rest of the continent’s other countries combined. • A melting pot of nearly countless cultures and races, with a stunning array of natural abundance in a landscape of unimaginable diversity.

Christ the Redeemer

Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The author’s advice: “If you come to my city, get your picture taken with Jesus! What other city can say that?”

Since our first stop is Rio de Janeiro, I’ve been sifting through everything I can get my hands on that describe this bustling city from every perspective.  Of course, I prefer to lean towards those articles written by natives…and particularly those natives who LOVE their city.

Take a read at this truthful, simply written “insider’s guide to RIO  by Lucy Bryson:

Rio de Janeiro is My City
Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for IHMC.jpg
The first place I take a visitor from out of town is Santa Teresa. Most people think Rio is all about the beaches, but this bohemian hillside neighborhood has the most beautiful buildings in the city, fantastic views, excellent bars and restaurants in an amazing village-style environment.

When I crave decent vegetarian food I always go to New Natural. This place has a great, largely veggie, buffet, and the best pastéis (stuffed pastries) in the city.

To escape the heat I head to Parque Lage–you can seek shade in the little caves if the beating sun gets too much!

If I want to work on my tan I go to Ipanema Beach.

For complete quiet, I can hide away at Parque Catacumba. It’s right by the Lagoa, but very few tourists have discovered this shady park.

If you come to my city, get your picture taken with Jesus! What other city can say that?

If you have to order one thing off the menu from the ubiquitous street side snack bars it has to be pão de queijo. These little cheese bread balls are unbelievably addictive. 2785812228_f1276c2f5a.jpgLapa is my one-stop shop for great nightlife, historic buildings, vintage clothes shops and a fantastic monthly antique market.

Locals know to skip work and check out the beach instead.

When I’m feeling cash-strapped I go to Centro and check out the cheap pay-by-weight restaurants.

For a huge splurge I go to Aprazível and watch the monkeys play in the trees as I enjoy a meal in the tropical gardens.

Photo ops in my city include Christo Redentor, Sugar Loaf, and the city beaches and the best vantage points are from up in the hills in Santa Teresa.

If my city were a celebrity it’d be Johnny Depp. Slightly edgy, very sexy.

The most random thing about my city is the things people sell on the street. Children’s life jacket, anyone? Mini-sewing kit? Clockwork mouse? It all depends on what fell off the back of a lorry that day.

In my city, an active day outdoors involves hiking in Parque Floresta da Tijuca.

My city’s best museum is Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil.

My favorite jogging/walking route is Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.

For a night of dancing, go to any of the samba clubs in Lapa. Or, for live music, check out Leblon for bossa nova.

Koni Store is the spot for late-night eats. There are branches of this sushi joint all across the city.

To find out what’s going on at night and on the weekends, read www.lanalapa.com.br.

You can tell a lot about my city by the exuberance of its people.

You can tell if someone is from my city if they place more importance on the beach and futebol (soccer) than on work.

In the spring you should be prepared for rain.

In the summer you should spend your days at the beach and your nights at street bars and street parties.

In the fall you should take advantage of the cooler weather and see the city on foot.

In the winter you should make the most of beach days before a cold front comes along to spoil the fun.

2292911572_d8f237f1ba.jpg

A hidden gem in my city is Parque das Ruínas – you can see amazing views from the top of this restored mansion house set in pretty gardens.

For a great breakfast joint try Casa Cave, in Centro. Or any of the juice bars that you find on every street corner. If you’re feeling rough from the night before, order an açai juice (made from the Amazonian ‘power berry’).

Don’t miss Carnaval in February and/or March.

Just outside my city, you can visit Ilha Grande. An enormous tropical island dotted with beautiful beaches.

The best way to see my city is from the sky – if you have the nerves for it (which I don’t), try taking a tandem hanggliding flight.

If my city were a pet it would be a toucan – so beautiful it appears almost unreal.

The best book about my city is Rio for Partiers.

When I think about my city, the song that comes to mind is País Tropical, by Jorge Ben Jor.

If you have kids, you won’t want to miss the bonde (tram) ride up to Santa Teresa.

Luxury apartment complexes right next door to sprawling slums could only happen in my city.

My city should be featured on your cover or website because it is at once beautiful/ugly/welcoming/challenging, and socially fascinating.

##

ESCAPESEEKER fans, please stay tuned, as together, we begin to unwrap this incredible present of an opportunity to explore and embrace the 5th largest country in the world–both by geographical area and by population, and is the the largest country in South America.

In the meantime, I’ve been advised that a good place to start learning about Brazil and Brazilians is with the country’s “national passion”–music, soccer, and Carnaval.  Studying Brazil’s past can also help us understand its present.

This is one of the things I love most about being the ESCAPESEEKER–my learning curve quadruples every time I get an assignment to a place I’ve never been.  It’s mind-enlarging, soul-enlarging all at the same time!

To say I’m excited is such an understatement!

Forever Grateful for Never-Ending ESCAPES is definitely more apropos.

With love,

Mel aka ESCAPESEEKER

FEATURED GUEST TALENT OF THE WEEK: PLEIN AIR PAINTER, MIKE CARROLL

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Lana’i, Hawaii — It was once again, one of those very lucky introductions that led me and my ESCAPESEEKER team  to one of Hawaii’s most admired artist, MIKE CARROLL, a resident of Lana’i City.  And, as we often find in our efforts to discover the special individuals whose inspiring story is TV-ready–Mike is exactly that–SPECIAL.  It’s interesting that more often, the incredibly talented people we meet, are the ones who are genuinely down-to-earth, and generous with their precious time.  Mike is no exception…and we cannot wait to share his inspiring story in the Lana’i episode entitled, “Little Lana’i, Bigger Than Life!”

Stay tuned as we share Mike’s journey with you.  How does a successful professional Chicago artist find the courage to give up the career he built for two decades, and start all over in the tiniest of islands–Lana’i? Well, you’ll soon find out.  If you’ve ever dreamed of making a life-changing, soul-transforming step to pursue your life-long passion–this is one episode you will not want to miss!  And by the way, fortunately for Mike, his beautiful wife of 30 + years,  Kathy was as keen on turning a new chapter in their exciting new  life’s journey. I’ve gotta tell you…their inspiring story is now on my top ten favorites!

ESCAPESEEKER is absolutely taken by Mike and Kathy Carroll's story: Got a Dream? Live it!

AT RAINBOW'S END, WE FOUND HEAVEN'S HEAVEN...Image by Pierre Lesage

“Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together.”

~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

ESCAPESEEKER Travel Series — At first glance, it may appear that ESCAPESEEKER is just another typical TV travel series.  For many ESCAPESEEKER supporters who have had the opportunity to accompany us on our various assignments, they will be the first to tell you that ESCAPESEEKER is so much more than a “travel show”!

Here are a few recent samplings of the comments we’ve received from our ESCAPESEEKER participants:

“First of all, it’s unique that the show is created and hosted by a professional journalist who is also a mother of six and grandmother of eight.  Mel, as the  ESCAPESEEKER provides an inspiring and joyful look into unabashedly luxurious destinations, reflecting where and how to travel and demonstrating the most unforgettable, “bucket list” type of experiences.  Mel keeps it real, and keeps it honest.  You know that anything Mel does on film, she actually did do!”  She’s not acting–but an honest to goodness real person who thrives on making new friends wherever she goes!”

*****

“I am so blessed to have been asked to work with The ESCAPESEEKER Research Team. The love and friendship that Mel Henderson has shown me in only 5 days is beyond belief! We have landed on our 2nd island to begin writing the second half of our Hawaiian journey. I can’t wait to get started in the morning.”

*****

“The program is inspiring and beckons the audience to “Live the Life You’ve Imagined.” Just as inspiring and uplifting is the Creator and Host Mel Gee Henderson’s life. Born in the Philippines to a single mother, raised barefoot and impoverished by her grandmother, later adopted and brought to the United States by her stepfather, a U.S. Marine, she excelled in school, graduated in broadcast journalism, landed a job as a congressional aide on Capitol Hill, followed by a series of TV/Print journalism assignments, then an opportunity to segue as a television documentary producer, and feature film producer, and all the while finding time to assist with philanthropic relief organizations such as C.A.R.E. which works tirelessly to help the less fortunate in impoverished regions of the world.   The funny thing about Mel, if she says she’ll climb mountains if she needs to in order to help–she actually will and does as proven in the 1997  Kilimanjaro Climb for C.A.R.E.–something that even astonished her six, now grown children.  They’re the first to express, “Mom never forgets her humble beginnings, and honestly  she is the hardest working woman we know…we can’t figure out when our Mom actually sleeps! And, one more thing,  Mom never sent us out the door without saying, ‘Be the kindest person you know’!”

*****

Others agree! INFINITI provided its G37 hand built 500,000 euro proto-type convertible as the vehicle for the two ESCAPESEEKER’s own version of Tour de France episodes and this is what INFINITI’s global luxury magazine ADEYAKA had to say about ESCAPESEEKER:

“An extraordinary format, implemented by an extraordinary team, which in turn is led by an extraordinary lady, for the TV series ESCAPESEEKER, Mel Gee Henderson travels around the world with her colleagues, reporting from the most beautiful places on earth in a completely new light for viewers.”

“A Thing of Beauty”

*****

It is extremely humbling for me to read these very kind comments.  But, I recognize that ESCAPESEEKER would not be possible without the tremendous support we continually receive from supporters from around the world.  ESCAPESEEKER has truly turned into a program brought about by a network of genuine global support and friendships.  And, I also know that we have a very unique team.  We all sincerely appreciate people from all cultures and religions…from every walk of life!  I have five rules that I demand my ESCAPESEEKER team follow:

1.  No Whining Allowed EVER while you’re traveling with the team.

2.  Every time we land on foreign soil, I request that the team “take off their American lenses” and see the country through the natives’ eyes.

3.  Above all, Be Respectful of the foreign soil that we have been given the privilege to explore!

4.  Extend a genuine hand of friendship…when teaching opportunities arise (particularly with our photographers)–take the time to teach…and don’t forget to SMILE!

5.  BE GRATEFUL FOR LIFE…FOR FREEDOM…FOR INTELLECT…FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE BACK…AND, FOR A WORLD FULL OF FRIENDS WAITING TO BE MET!

What a spectacular year it has been.  We have certainly had our share of challenges.  But we have also had our share of unforgettable moments that we shall never ever forget–all of which came as a result of our team receiving kindness or extending kindness.  For this is the lesson we have learned from our miles and miles of travel:  No matter where we go, no matter how foreign and different it may all appear:  Beneath the surface and language barriers, we are all the same…each one seeking to find a way to live a meaningful, joy-filled life…a life that deserves respect and love.  Yes, those four simple letters that can transform an individual, a village, a nation, and as impossible as it may seem, I fervently believe that we can strive to transform the world…one act of kindness at a time!

Below are just a few of the individuals we shall never forget.  Thank you for sharing with our ESCAPESEEKER team your tremendous hospitality and vibrant spirit.  You believed in ESCAPESEEKER from the very beginning, and we’re truly grateful.

Since then, we have logged in countless miles, hours and hours of unbelievably stunning footage.  And, each time we marvel how incredibly blessed we are to get to do what we do…that is capture magical images of people and places that tell their inspiring stories as we pay tribute to cultures, sometimes familiar and most often very foreign…and at the end of the day, we have to pinch ourselves to make sure we’re not dreaming, as we ask each other,  “How beautiful is our earth?”

Thank you ESCAPESEEKER friends and fans…for your trust and unwavering support.

With love,

Mel and the entire ESCAPESEEKER team

IS ESCAPESEEKER UP TO “THE CHALLENGE”? WE CAN’T WAIT TO FIND OUT!

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

The Challenge at Manele Bay: If Golf is your Passion, This is your Nirvana!

Four Seasons Resort Lana’i, The Challenge at ManeleIF GOLF IS YOUR PASSION, then THE CHALLENGE at MANELE has to be on your life’s absolute must do “bucket list”!  For those of you who have already played this course, you know exactly what I’m talking about right?

IF GOLF IS YOUR GAME, DREAMS COME TRUE AT MANELE

ESCAPESEEKER LIVING THE DREAM...

As the ESCAPESEEKER, I thrive on seeking out the greatest destinations in the world—so even though I’m no seasoned golfer…ok, let’s back up…let me rephrase that and keep it real, keep it honest—I’m just a rookie beginner golfer, but nothing was going to keep me from experiencing this magnificent golf course!  And, with a little help from my friends, that’s exactly what I did.  Thanks to a very patient, meticulous, enthusiastic teacher, The Challenge golf pro, Kevin Bresnahan, I was able to have a sneak peak at how it feels to play this breathtaking course.  Kevin guided me though every shot, and after I would play my ball—this is my favorite part—Kevin would hit his shot with that thrilling sound of his club making contact—exactly perfect may I add, and I would follow the flight of his ball across sea-plunging red cliffs, and then watch in envy as it landed softly on the green nestling close to the cup!  I want and hope to learn how to do the same someday!  And, someday is going to come soon enough as our film team returns in April, 2011 to capture me and Kevin in action.  So, if GOLF is your game, contact me—maybe I can help make your “bucket list” dream come true too!

Golf Pro, Kevin Bresnahan, "Mel, please permit me to show you how it's done." Wow! Beautiful Kevin!

In the meantime, let me fuel your imagination and allow a real golfer, Kevin Bresnahan describe THE CHALLENGE at Manele experience:

GOLFERS OF ALL LEVELS EMERGE UNSCATHED

Kevin Bresnahan, THE CHALLENGE at MANELE Golf Pro, always had a smile and an encouraging word to say about my game. He truly knows this course like the back of his hand!

Carved out of the rugged coast, the Challenge at Manele sprawls across ancient lava fields, with 180-degree ocean panoramas from every hole. A theater of color unfolds: red cliffs plunging down to blue sea, green fairways engulfing white sandtraps, and blossoms from fissures in the black lava rock. This was the palette of designer Jack Nicklaus, who shaped the 7,039–yard, par 72 championship course, carefully protecting and preserving the archaeological ruins within its borders.

Teeing off from the cliffs at Hulopoe Bay with the Pacific surging below, you face perhaps the world’s most unforgiving water hazard. The twelfth hole is nothing short of a leap of faith, with 200 yards of churning waves to cross. Other holes demand shots over yawning ravines. Fortunately, the five-tee concept – with courses of shorter yardage mapped in red, white, blue, gold and “Nicklaus” – allows golfers of all levels to emerge unscathed.

If you’re ready to play the most unforgettable round of golf of your life, be sure to give Kevin a call.  For more info:  http://www.golfonlanai.com/manele/

In the meantime, keep practicing and have an amazing weekend.

SWEEEEEEEEEEET!

NEW MEMBERS ADDED TO OUR ESCAPESEEKER ADVANCE RESEARCH TEAM (ART) FOR 2011 EPISODES

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Dallas, Texas — We are pleased to announce the addition of two talented individuals to serve on our ESCAPESEEKER “Advance Research Team” (ART).  They are:   Christina Noakes, Production Assistant and Creative Adviser; and Lisa Hensley, Stills Photographer.

Christina Noakes, captured here on the 12th hole of THE CHALLENGER course at the Four Seasons Resort Lana'i, still taking notes on her iPad, was born disciplined! Her attention to details knows no bounds. But if you think she's the typical Business/Finance Management Grad, you will be very wrong. Most people who spend even five minutes with Christina usually go away saying, "She is the kindest, most beautiful person I've ever met!" And, her two brothers plus three sisters will be the first to agree! Of course there is also her husband, Shelby and their twin babies who absolutely adore her.

THE ESCAPESEEKER TRAITS

The traits I look for as I’m “building” my ESCAPESEEKER team, first and foremost, is that of resiliency and the ability to work as a team.  Because we always travel in groups for long periods of time and meet new people around the world continually, it is crucial that each team member also possess a natural affinity for people.  And, Lisa and Christina are no exception!

I also admire that Lisa and Christina are very real–in that in addition to the talents they bring to the team,  they are very engaged in there own lives, beyond ESCAPESEEKER.

LIVE A MULTI-DIMENTIONAL LIFE

Since joining Ballet Arizona in 2004, Christina has danced in soloist and featured roles in numerous performances, and danced in many other classical ballets including Paquita, Coppelia, Romeo and Juliet, La Sylphide, Swan Lake, and Giselle.  Over the past twelve years, Christina has enjoyed sharing her dance knowledge and experience by teaching an array of dancers—from young children learning ballet for the first time, to university-level dancers, to competitive figure skaters.  Christina received her early training with the Jacqueline Colledge School of Classical Ballet and in 1998 joined the Utah Regional Ballet.  She has won several ballet awards including full scholarships to the Jen Wong School of Dance in Beijing, China and Utah Valley University.  Christina was accepted into summer programs with Pacific Northwest Ballet and City Ballet in San Francisco on full scholarship and has toured Austria and Amsterdam. Christina retired from Ballet Arizona in 2008 to dedicate time to her twins and teaching, and assist the ESCAPESEEKER team whenever the featured destination calls for her unique athletic abilities and intrinsic artistic perspective.

Lisa Hensley's Motto: "You won't do anyone a favor by running away from your dream. The greater good will be served as you go for the thing you want. What you want wants you." After spending 9 days with Lisa, I think what she wants is to capture the PERFECT PICTURE. And, on the island of Lana'i--she came very, very close. Just ask artist, Mike Carroll who immortalized the image by transforming it into an oil painting! He was so moved by its beauty. WOW LISA!

Lisa Hensley is a natural multi-tasker–and that definitely is a welcome ESCAPESEEKER trait! Everyone on the team wears many hats, depending on what’s needed during each episode shoot.  Lisa, a mother of six, is able to run her photography business, and care for her growing family too.

I definitely relate to Lisa–six children was my magic number too.  And, like Lisa, I believe in following your dream.  We recognize that there are many seasons to a woman’s life–and in the blink of an eye or so it seems, our children are grown and on their own, living happy, productive lives.

So, let our examples inspire you…don’t swim against the tide…if your current situation requires you to be a stay-at-home Mom–embrace it.  But don’t let go of that dream…let it simmer–do a little here, a little there, continually nurture your talents–because sooner or later your day will come.  And, nothing will be more satisfying than when you can look back and know that you met the responsibilities that life handed you…and when your time arrives for you to soar–your wings will be ready and able!

NURTURE A GRATEFUL HEART

I truly appreciate working with a team that recognizes the  unique task we have been given.  And, it’s a tremendous JOY working with individuals who meet each new day and travel opportunity with so much gratitude.  This is what makes the ESCAPESEEKER travel series different from the others.  Our entire team gratefully and respectfully acknowledges the incredible trust that has been place in all of us to capture the true essence of every destination we feature.  Building friendships all along the way is an absolute added bonus!

Thank you team…for being the talented, dedicated ESCAPESEEKER that you are!

What’s next for our film team?  We’re traveling in November to the picturesque, “California Riviera” town of LAGUNA BEACH to film the ESCAPESEEKER “ART OF LIVING” episode, anchored around the postcard-perfect luxury resort of MONTAGE LAGUNA BEACH.  If you’d like to get a sneak peak at this stunning retreat which just joined the ranks of  Conde Nast BEST SPAS in the World rating, feel free to click below.  Who knows, maybe we’ll see you there?  We sure hope so!

THE FOUR SEASONS RESORT LANA’I, The Lodge at Koele Hits the Mark: ESCAPESEEKER Experiences the Thrill of Sporting Clays Shooting!

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Lana’i – HAWAII–Whether you are a beginner or an expert, I bet most of you have no idea that in the tiny island of Lana’i you can find one of the world’s most ideal location for sporting clays shooting.  When I signed up to give this sport another try—my first experience with the sport was in Ireland—I was definitely not expecting to find such a class act operation.  But then again, I’m at the Four Seasons Resort!  HELLO, of course the experience would hit the mark!

On the island of Lana'i: "The Lodge at Koele, a veranda-wrapped plantationesque mirage rising amid the surprisingly cool, sweet-scented uplands of the interior." ~ K.M. Kostyal, Nat Geo

The Lana’i Pine Sporting Clays’ Manager, Dennis Rapp, dressed in his crisp kahki Clay Shooting uniform,  picked up my ESCAPESEEKER team from Koele Lodge, a welcoming, immaculately landscaped country lodge nestled in Lana’i’s central highlands.  As I described my sentiments about Koele Lodge to a local native, “I feel like I’m visiting the country home of a very wealthy, loving  Grandma.   Her response, “Mel, we like to say, we’re visiting Uncle David.”  She was making reference to Los Angeles entrepreneur, David Murdock who bought the island in 1985.  More on that later.  For now, let me tell you more about this incredible Sporting Clays Shooting operation that draws sportsmen from around the world.   For a novice like me, there was no better place than to learn it from such seasoned pros, and less I forget, in  such a stunning island environment.

AM I IN HAWAII? Pine and ironwood trees span the Koele Lodge landscape

The short cool drive from Four Seasons Resort Lana’i, The Lodge at Koele to Lana‘i Pine Sporting Clays through pine and ironwood trees that span the landscape made me almost forget that I’m truly in Hawaii!

Upon arriving, the first step, according to manager Dennis, is to outfit the shooter properly. Not a problem–of course, we love being outfitted properly so that no matter how we shoot, we will at least look the part right?  I learned that the club offers shotguns in different gauges, including both Berettas and Remingtons. Most men, he notes, will use the heavier 12-gauge shotguns; most women and children will use either the lighter 20- or 28-gauge.

To those who know sporting clays shooting, the usual images are of moors in the United Kingdom where the sport began. It was initially a training exercise for would-be hunters keeping their aim sharp by breaking clay targets—or “birds”—on the same terrain they would eventually be prowling, shotguns in hand. The targets were projected in patterns that mimicked the flight of local birds such as woodcock or pheasant, or the darting of small woodland game such as hare and rabbit.

People found it so much fun, especially for those who weren’t keen on hunting, that it became a genuine sport. And so it is at Lana’i Pine Sporting Clays.  It doesn’t get any better than this:

Experience the Excitement!

Our Introduction to the sport by native Sporting Clays Shooting expert, Sid:

Sid enthusiastically explains, "I have the best job in the world!"

Safety is #1

#1 is Safety

Safety  is critical, and every lesson or round begins with careful handling of the shotguns. They’re fine pieces of equipment and immediately dominate the concentration. For the beginner a 45-minute lesson with one box of shotgun shells is the necessary introduction to shooting. But it didn’t take long for Sid to realize that we had some very skilled shooters in the group—especially our photographer, Lisa Hensley.  As Sid commented after Lisa hit 5 marks in a row, “Wouldn’t want to get Lisa mad!”

Escapeseeker learning the basics from the Pro...

I, on the other hand was very happy to get his added guidance in the broad and fine points of aiming and firing.

The Stations

A sporting clays course is arranged in stations; there are 14 at Lana’i Pine Sporting Clays. They’re named by the game the flight pattern of the clay targets represents. Thus the shooter meets what may be the familiar pheasant, mallard and teal.

PULL!!! It is so thrilling to see the clay target shatter in a zillion pieces!

But there are other aspects unique to Lana‘i.  When shooting back in Ireland and I called “Pull!”—the command that initiates the ejection of the flying target—it was definitely not for a Hawaiian quail, for example. And in Ireland,  my shooting experience did not include a stunning view of Molokai!

A CLAY SHOOTING STATION WITH A VIEW!!! It doesn't get much better than this!

It didn’t take long before I totally forgot my fear and discomfort for guns.  With the thorough instruction and step by step explanation that Sid provided at each station, even novices like me became pretty good at hitting my target.  Sid pointed out that what sporting clays shooting requires is a smooth, fluid gesture with the shotgun firm on the shoulder and one cheek (my mega round cheeks finally came in handy) on the stock that brings the barrel to exactly the right point of release. With a target low overhead, one “covers” the target and fires. With a target overhead, flung from one of the club’s six tower stations, more of a lead is required to intercept the target with breaking shot.

Oh What A Feeling:  The Thrill of the Sport

We never grew tired of the thrill of breaking targets.  Sid explained,  “as seasoned instructions, we don’t either.”  I could tell Sid got a lot of satisfaction at hearing three of us girls squeal each time we hit our targets. By the way, there are other options, in case you wish to mix it up a bit:  There’s trap, skeet and wobble traps. Archery is also an option.

ESCAPESEEKER team is game to try anything...

Adding to the excitement and thrill of the sport. Don't worry, this Turkey will not end up in the oven.

And, recently, the Manager, Dennis, added a new interesting course with exceptional “wildlife” targets to add to the challenge and excitement of the sport!

Who new that hidden in the Pines of Lana’i, ESCAPESEEKER would discover a prime Sporting Clays Shooting Nirvana?
